Raid 5 Disk Space

RAID 5 combines minimum 3 hard disks in which it stripes data and parity information across all. Out of these 3 disks, only 2 can store data while the one left stores the parity bits. Its total disk space can be calculated as (size of the drive) * (No. of disks-1). Though this space is not too less but for database application (which is what raid 5 is generally used for), the amount for disk space required is huge as the data is simple enormous.

Increasing the number of hard disks

If the number of raid 5 hard disk is increased, the raid 5 disk space will obviously increase. But one cannot rule out the fact that with greater the number of disks, the number of disk errors are most likely to increase. Hence, the number of disks must be maintained below 14.

A new “concept”

Scientists have brainstormed and have come up with a solution. Here, if the hard disks are added to the already existing array, then the space will be much greater. Though we had always heard of disks being replaced in raid but how can it be added to the raid 5 array? By the means of software that enables new disks to be added to an array is a savior.

What about dynamic addition of hard disks?

Well, for a relational database system, it is not possible to go offline to increase array space. Even for businesses requiring online transaction, disks can be added only if the process takes place online or on the go. The moment the data requirement is felt, a disk could be added to the raid array. Moreover, the user should not be able to sense that a disk addition is taking place.

How much time will it take to add a disk?

Raid 5 disk space should be increased in a matter of minutes. But it depends on the amount of data in the array. As the disk being added has to be striped with the data present in the array, the process might take a little more time.
